I'd say as far as assets go, unless you make something amazing nobody is going to care. That doesn't mean every platformer will do worse, but it means your expected income will be lower. If for example you compare 2d platformers and first person shooters and look at their median/mean income, clearly platformers do worse. I don't think the advice "your sales depend on what you do" is useful though, I think people should compare different approaches and their baseline result. Yes your sales depend on marketing, but the same can be said for anything else, and at least as far as music goes, I don't think anyone cares about it at all. My conclusion: compared to organic traffic for games you get basically nothing for assets. I didn't do any marketing for either other than maybe posting it on Discord or tweeting about it with no reach. Some time later I posted it on the Unity Asset Store and since then got 1297 pageviews and 235 downloads.Ranked #1 on itch.io for a few days after release, got 1531 views and 284 downloads total in about 10 months, and $2 donation. It's nothing amazing, just a few music tracks, but I made some graphics for it and mainly wanted to see what the organic traffic is like ( ). I was curious about this so I made one free asset and put it up on both itch and Unity Asset store.
